If i do not file bankruptcy can a creditor garnish my wages or bank accts ?

I am looking at having to file bankruptcy due to credit card debt. Can anyone give me advice???

I currently owe around $8,000 in credit card debt. I can pay my regular monthly utility, etc bills, but I recently had to accept a part-time job and cannot handle the growing credit card debt I have incurred. I own my own house and owe nothing towards it and I was just looking for someone else out there who has had to file bankruptcy that can lend me some self advice on the process and what to do or not do. I’ve also heard of filing on my own instead of using a lawyer to avoid the high fees. Has anyone done this as well? Your help will be greatly appreciated!

My best advice to you…..get in touch with a mortgage company and get a home equity line of credit against your home. I would not file a bankruptcy which is on your credit report for 10 years, and creditors on for 7….Bankruptcy should be your last resort. With a paid off home, you’re looking at a chapter 13, and payment plans for at least 5 years, and on your credit report, and you cannot finance anything until you get the approval of a trustee that is handling a chapter 13 bk for you. Please do some searching before you ruin what credit you have by filing a bankruptcy over 8K….I wish I had been lucky enough to have such little debt when I filed mine last year! You don’t state what income you bring in..but….please don’t think of bankruptcy….If you cannot re-fi the home, call the creditors and see if they will reduce and you can get out from under the balances.
